2017 Goalball Provincial Championships

Goalball is a sport that was created in 1946 as a means to rehabilitate blinded World War II veterans. It has now become a Paralympic Sport for blind and visually impaired athletes. The Gloucester Lions have assisted with funding for two local athletes who participated in 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona, in 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia, 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens and in 2008 in Beijing.
Over the years whenever a national tournament was held in Ottawa, the Gloucester Lions would assist in providing and serving lunch to the athletes. An additional focus of this year’s Tournament was introducing Goalball to low vision students in the school systems.
